Birthdays With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 30, 2013 2:15 am / 6 Comments / Keith

(Continued from my previous post)

Jehovah’s Witnesses can find a segue way for anything. One minute we are talking about politics and then the next minute we are talking about birthdays. The connection? The daily text from September 21st discusses the Watchtower’s twisted interpretation of John 15:19– “Because you are no part of the world, . . . on this account the world hates you.”

Earlier in the conversation, I had mentioned that my birthday was the day before our meeting. I wondered if he would bite and if he did, what he would say about it. I’ve talked with Jehovah’s Witnesses before about birthdays, but this would be different because I have a closer relationship with my Witness elder friend that I did with any of the other Witnesses who have spoken with me about this topic. He transitioned from the part of the daily text which mentions abstention from pagan festivals to my birthday. Read More →

Politics With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

Are Christians prohibited from voting?

For someone who doesn’t vote, my Jehovah’s Witness friend sure is well informed about politics. We never cracked open the “Teach” book and had a lively conversation about politics and being “no part of this world.” My friend brought the other Jehovah’s Witness who has come before. The three of us had a very intense conversation.

The conversation got started because the restaurant TV was tuned to a news channel which was reporting on Ted Cruz’ filibuster concerning Obama-care. I was impressed that my friend was able to hold an informed discussion regarding socialism, politics, healthcare in our country as well as the policies of other countries. We spoke for nearly an hour before he finally opened his Bible. Read More →

War With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 23, 2013 8:13 am / 12 Comments / Keith

(Continued from my last post)

The subject of War will fire up a Jehovah’s Witness unlike most subjects. In their minds it proves that they are the one true religion because they refuse to participle in War where they may be forced to take someone’s life. They would be horrified if it was the life of another Jehovah’s Witness. They reason, “How can we say we have love among ourselves if we are fighting each other in war?”

The first time I ever heard this argument, I was taken aback. I had never really thought about the fact that in World War II, Protestants were killing Protestants and Catholics were killing Catholics. Witnesses will proudly declare that no Jehovah’s Witness ever killed another Jehovah’s Witness in World War II. When my Witness friend felt backed into a corner due to my questions about how the organization can change “truth,” he retreated to his safe place “knowing” that he belongs to the one true religion because they don’t kill each other in war. Defining “Inspiration” With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 20, 2013 12:40 pm / 8 Comments / Keith

When I arrived at the restaurant, my Witness friend already ordered and had a desert sitting in front of my spot at the table. He has been doing that for awhile now. Our friendship has grown and we are very comfortable in each other’s presence. We talked for roughly 45 minutes before we even began our study. I honestly enjoy his company and I think the feeling is mutual. I believe part of the reason he continues to meet with me, in spite of all the hard questions I have given him, is because we are building a friendship. (It is not uncommon for us to text each other during the week about unrelated things.) It is imperative that if our relationship is going to continue, he needs to know that I genuinely care, not to mention, it will make it harder for him to drop me if he likes me. Once we got into the “Teach” book, I knew most of our conversation would be about chapter two, paragraph five. I have been waiting for this conversation for weeks. Read More →

Forgiveness Of Sin With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 18, 2013 9:14 am / 8 Comments / Keith

If Jesus paid it all, what else is there for me to do?

(Continued from my last post)

Once we got into the “Teach” book, we only got through two paragraphs in chapter two before we spent the rest of our time discussing a completely unrelated topic. The first two paragraphs discuss receiving a gift from a friend and being grateful for it. The Bible is likened to a gift from God. The second paragraph speaks about some reasons why the Bible is an exciting gift, but it doesn’t mention a reason I believe is extremely important. Whenever you see a glaring omission like this, take advantage of it. Read More →
