Mormonism Confirms That It Is Not Moving Towards Christianity

September 24, 2013 10:42 am / 88 Comments / Keith

Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy (Proverbs 27:6).

A number of years ago I was asked to be on a local call-in radio program to talk about Mormonism. The San Antonio LDS temple was conducting a public open house at that time. The radio host who thought of the idea wanted two guests, one person representing Mormonism and one person who disagreed with it. The original idea was for both of us to be on the radio at the same time and do some sort of lively debate.

Unfortunately, the Mormon public relations official chosen for the event absolutely refused to go on air with me at the same time. The only way he would agree to do it was if I went first and then a he would go on 15 minutes after my time was over so that he could have a little bit of time to prepare. The radio host was perturbed at the Mormon’s insistence and asked if I would be willing to do the show anyway. I eagerly agreed. Read More →

War With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 23, 2013 8:13 am / 12 Comments / Keith

(Continued from my last post)

The subject of War will fire up a Jehovah’s Witness unlike most subjects. In their minds it proves that they are the one true religion because they refuse to participle in War where they may be forced to take someone’s life. They would be horrified if it was the life of another Jehovah’s Witness. They reason, “How can we say we have love among ourselves if we are fighting each other in war?”

The first time I ever heard this argument, I was taken aback. I had never really thought about the fact that in World War II, Protestants were killing Protestants and Catholics were killing Catholics. Witnesses will proudly declare that no Jehovah’s Witness ever killed another Jehovah’s Witness in World War II. When my Witness friend felt backed into a corner due to my questions about how the organization can change “truth,” he retreated to his safe place “knowing” that he belongs to the one true religion because they don’t kill each other in war. Defining “Inspiration” With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 20, 2013 12:40 pm / 8 Comments / Keith

When I arrived at the restaurant, my Witness friend already ordered and had a desert sitting in front of my spot at the table. He has been doing that for awhile now. Our friendship has grown and we are very comfortable in each other’s presence. We talked for roughly 45 minutes before we even began our study. I honestly enjoy his company and I think the feeling is mutual. I believe part of the reason he continues to meet with me, in spite of all the hard questions I have given him, is because we are building a friendship. (It is not uncommon for us to text each other during the week about unrelated things.) It is imperative that if our relationship is going to continue, he needs to know that I genuinely care, not to mention, it will make it harder for him to drop me if he likes me. Once we got into the “Teach” book, I knew most of our conversation would be about chapter two, paragraph five. I have been waiting for this conversation for weeks. Read More →

Forgiveness Of Sin With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 18, 2013 9:14 am / 8 Comments / Keith

If Jesus paid it all, what else is there for me to do?

(Continued from my last post)

Once we got into the “Teach” book, we only got through two paragraphs in chapter two before we spent the rest of our time discussing a completely unrelated topic. The first two paragraphs discuss receiving a gift from a friend and being grateful for it. The Bible is likened to a gift from God. The second paragraph speaks about some reasons why the Bible is an exciting gift, but it doesn’t mention a reason I believe is extremely important. Whenever you see a glaring omission like this, take advantage of it. Read More →

Once Again, The Name of God With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

September 11, 2013 8:57 pm / 3 Comments / Keith

A fragment of the Septuagint in which the Tetragrammaton appears.

I know I am about to have an intense discussion when my Jehovah’s Witness elder buddy begins our conversation by pointing to my iPad, grinning through his teeth and asking, “Is that thing fully charged?”

KW: (Laughing) Uh, Yeah.

JW: Good because I want to talk about the name of God one more time.

KW: AGAIN?

My witness friend brought his study edition of the New World Translation this time. There were some things he wanted to show me last week, but he didn’t have his study edition Bible which discusses a bunch of different topics in the many appendices. Appendix 1D is titled, “The Divine Name in the Christian Greek Scriptures.” This title is deceptive because the Watchtower refers to the New Testament as “The Christian Greek Scriptures,” yet the appendix speaks about the Septuagint.
