Explaining John 6:54 and how it DOES NOT refer to the Jehovah’s Witness Memorial (Communion)

April 2, 2025 1:05 pm / Leave a Comment / Keith

Right around this time every year, Jehovah’s Witnesses host their annual Memorial. Well-meaning former JWs (both Christian and not) argue that unless JWs partake of the bread and wine, they do not have eternal life. John 6:54 is used as a proof text. I wrote this article a few years ago refuting that argument.

According to Mormonism, their temple underwear is a sacred symbol of Jesus Christ.

Mormon Jesus in temple garments
The Mormon Jesus in temple garments.

In April of this year, the Mormon Church revised its temple recommend questions in order to be more clear that there is no room for personal interpretation on garments. They are to be worn “day and night throughout your life.”

Temple garments, worn under all other clothing, including normal underwear, are viewed as a sacred obligation for temple worthy Mormons. Before members are granted access to the temple, they must successfully pass a temple recommend interview by a local leader. Members are asked numerous questions about their personal worthiness to enter a temple. Now a new revised statement will be read to every recommend seeker. It says in part, “The garment of the holy priesthood reminds us of the veil in the temple, and that veil is symbolic of Jesus Christ. When you put on your garment, you put on a sacred symbol of Jesus Christ.”

Jehovah’s Witness Memorial Report 4/4/2023

Emblems of the 2023 Jehovah’s Witness Memorial

As is my custom (20+ years), I attended the annual Memorial of Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW) last night. Once a year the Witnesses celebrate what most Christians refer to as communion. I’ll give a short summary of what usually happens at this ceremony and then will describe the events of the evening.

Since this is the only religious holiday Jehovah’s Witnesses celebrate, attendance at Kingdom Halls for this service is much like Christmas and Easter is for Christians. If you are associated with the Witnesses in any way, and you could only make one meeting all year, this would be the meeting. Parking lots are usually filled, and everyone wears their Sunday best. The service starts just after sunset. Since there is limited space at Kingdom Halls, sometimes they will rent out public halls or hotel conference rooms. They also have a later meeting at 9:00 to accommodate everyone who wants to attend.

A follow-up question to the previous video. The purpose of this video is to challenge Mormons to think more clearly about their claim that temple ordinances are not secret.

QQFM is a series of quick questions for Mormons (hence the name) and other interested parties to ponder. The answers to the questions just might be a little more revealing than most Mormons would want to admit.

Are the ordinances done in Mormon temples sacred or secret? Maybe they’re a bit of both? This short video asks a quick question that reveals the answer.

QQFM is a series of quick questions for Mormons (hence the name) and other interested parties to ponder. The answers to the questions just might be a little more revealing than most Mormons would want to admit.
