Once Again, The Name of God With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder

I know I am about to have an intense discussion when my Jehovah’s Witness elder buddy begins our conversation by pointing to my iPad, grinning through his teeth and asking, “Is that thing fully charged?”

KW: (Laughing) Uh, Yeah.

JW: Good because I want to talk about the name of God one more time.

KW: AGAIN?

My witness friend brought his study edition of the New World Translation this time. There were some things he wanted to show me last week, but he didn’t have his study edition Bible which discusses a bunch of different topics in the many appendices. Appendix 1D is titled, “The Divine Name in the Christian Greek Scriptures.” This title is deceptive because the Watchtower refers to the New Testament as “The Christian Greek Scriptures,” yet the appendix speaks about the Septuagint. This question is directed at Jehovah’s Witnesses who may be unfamiliar with the Watchtower’s history of changing the identity of the Faithful and Discreet Slave mentioned in Matthew 24. This doctrine is being changed yet again, reflected in the articles discussed in the July 15, 2013 Study Edition of the Watchtower magazine.

Discussing The Authority Of The Watchtower With A Jehovah’s Witness Elder, Part 2

You do not HAVE to obey.

(Picking up where we left off yesterday. Read yesterday’s “part one” post for context.)
It got very quiet. The intensity level of our conversation was thicker than it has ever been. My friend took a moment to look at Matthew 4:4 and think about it. He began to pull at his tie and loosen up his collar. He eyes were wide with shock. He again referred back to Apollos and made a distinction between doctrine and opinion in what Priscilla and Aquila were teaching him. I told him the difference was that in that case, Apollos was teaching correct doctrine and was given more information. Yet the July 15, 2013 Watchtower is changing its doctrine completely.

KW: The Watchtower is saying, “We use to believe this way, but now we don’t believe that anymore. Now we believe this and you’ve got to accept it because we are the voice of God. If you don’t believe it, we’re going to kick you out.” That is the way it comes across to me. Read More →

Believe me or get kicked out!

My Jehovah’s Witness Elder friend was extremely uncomfortable for the majority of our two and a half hour meeting. We picked up where we left off from last week. I wanted to talk more about the paragraph I brought up last week where the Watchtower claims to speak God’s Words.
